Difficulty: LOW Setup Time: SHORT
Tools Needed: COMPUTER Website: www.symbaloo.com
Description: “Symbaloo is a visual bookmarking tool that makes it simple and fun to organize the best of the web. You have all your favorite websites at your fingertips. With an account you can access your bookmarks from everywhere with any device and share your online resources with others.”

Symbaloo is, in a nutshell, a bookmark website. Bookmarks, called “tiles” are arranged on the page with small photo icons and can be grouped by tabs, sections, and colors, allowing for quick access. Share these bookmarks with your students, so that they can quickly access quizzes, online textbooks, or other web resources quickly, saving valuable instruction time.

Granted the PRO upgrade that is free for teachers is not as good as the PRO+, which is available for a price, it does offer the ability to find resources that can be helpful in the classroom quickly and easily. For more information about possibly upgrading to PRO+ please check out: Symbaloo PRO+

Highlights:

  • Webmixes – Save time and find new resources quickly! Other teachers have created and shared “webmixes”, which hold grade level, or even subject specific bookmarks that you can use! Simply search for the term you want, such as “Science”, “2nd Grade”, etc and find preconfigured tabs that are ready to use immediately.
  • Sharing – Share your own webmixes with your students, or with your colleagues to help collaborate student learning objectives.
  • Visualization – One of the key features to Symbaloo is its layout. Organized by colors, images, and sections creates an easy way to quickly locate and access desired pages without getting lost with menus and sub-menus found in the drop downs of bookmark bars.

Google Tone

Category: CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT Audience: ALL
Difficulty: LOW Setup Time: SHORT
Tools Needed: EDUCATOR DEVICE, STUDENT DEVICE Website: Google Tone
Description: “Google Tone turns on your computer’s microphone (while the extension is on) and uses your computer’s speakers to exchange URLs with nearby computers connected to the Internet.” In a nutshell, Google Tone will allow you to push a link to your students device by simply clicking a button to send a sound. The teacher device must have their volume up, but when a sound is played, students will receive a notification that they click to redirect them to the website given. Google Tone is an extension that will need to be pushed out to students through the technology department, so if interested, please let them know!
Classroom Uses:

  • Stay On Task – Needing to get all of your students to a particular website? Tired of posting the link on the board for them to copy, or verbally trying to redirect students to the site? Send all of your students directly from your machine with the click of a button. Keeping them on task and ensuring they reach the destination in a timely manner.

Google Cast for Education

Category: CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT Audience: ALL
Difficulty: LOW Setup Time: SHORT
Tools Needed: EDUCATOR DEVICE, STUDENT DEVICE, PROJECTOR Website: ITeachwithGAFE
Description: Google Cast for Education allows students to share their screen directly with the educator. Simply add the app to the educator device, add the extension to student devices (can be pushed out via tech admin), then students can reach out to educators for assistance with a few simple clicks. Educators will receive a notification on their screen showing exactly what student is wishing to share, then they have the ability to either accept or deny the request. Teachers do not have control of student devices, but are able to see their current screen.
Classroom Uses:

  • Save Educator Time – Have you ever been in a lesson where students seem to have the same question that you are answering over and over? Using Google Cast for Education, a student can share their question with the educator, who then projects it to the rest of the class. Educators are then able to work through the problem, helping multiple students at one time, instead of answering the same question again and again to individuals.
  • Student Presentations – Sometimes it is difficult for students to get connected in order to present their work. Either you have to unplug and plug in other cords or cables, share a presentation via email or drive, or have a thumb drive available for students to move their work onto the educators device. Skip these headaches and simply share the students screen, sharing the presentation at the same time. Now students can present their work from the front of the room on their device and still project their necessary information.

ClassroomScreen.com

Category: CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT Audience: ELEMENTARY / JH
Difficulty: LOW Setup Time: SHORT
Tools Needed: PROJECTOR, COMPUTER
Optional: Microphone, Interactive White Board
Website: www.classroomscreen.com
Description: ClassroomScreen.com gives access to several classroom management tools that can be useful in multiple target audiences within the classrooms. Essentially, classroomscreen.com turns your browser into an interactive smart board. It has built in widgets such as a noise level indicator, timers, stoplight indicator (set by the teacher), notepads, and student polling features.
Highlights:

  • Timers – Set up station timers that are visible to students and you as you are moving about the room.
  • Stoplight – Working with groups? Help students visually see quiet / instruction time vs open discussion / work time. When the light is on red, students are focused on the teacher and the instructions being given, when the light is green, students can engage in their activities among themselves.
  • Noise Level – Give students visual representation of their noise level. Project this widget on the board so students can visually see what is considered “too loud”. Combine this with stop light to indicate times where low level discussion is set to take place, followed by indicating students were too loud and are to stop talking until allowed to resume discussion.
